Steph Luck’s Family Holiday to Coffs Harbour.

A family’s itinerary and top tips for travelling with kids

Here at Apollo Motorhome Holidays, we love seeing families taking off on road tripping adventures. Having your transport, kitchen, and accommodation all in one makes it super easy when travelling with kids and gives you the flexibility to visit as many destinations as your family would like. We recently had Steph Luck and her beautiful family including her little ones Zyla Grace & Huxley Ryan, join us for a family road trip from Sydney to Coffs Harbour. Steph has kindly shared her family’s itinerary and top tips for travelling with kids. Check it out below!

I know when travelling with kids hiring a RV may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but earlier on this year we thought we’d pack our bags and head off on a family road trip.  We decided to take off for a week and head north from Sydney to the beautiful Coffs Harbour. We found it be an affordable, fun option for a perfect little family getaway.

My top tips for travelling with kids:

  • USE the storage. Don’t bring suitcases. This takes up too much room and you don’t want to be crowded! We made sure everything was easily accessible and packed away so during the day when we were stopped there was space to move around

  • Buy your food – You can save so much money doing it this way (if you are working with a budget) again there is plenty of storage and the stove top and oven was used daily. It worked like magic.

  • Find a park that is kid friendly. The BIG 4 was great as there was so much to do. There were activities, a jumping pillow, game rooms and even movie nights.

  • Familiarise yourself with the RV- if you are not used to driving such a large vehicle, I suggest taking it slow and familiarising yourself.

  • Don’t live on a time frame, take your time, explore different towns and most of all have fun.\

Our family adventure: Sydney to Coffs Harbour and home!

Day 1

To start our family holiday we picked up our RV from Apollo’s Sydney branch (they have numerous pick up locations all over Australia). I suggest allowing an extra day or at least half to get the RV before setting off on your trip.

Because we have young kids we found it easier to pick up the RV and bring it home to pack everything we needed inside. This saved us from having to take everything we needed to the branch while also trying to keep the kids entertained while we watched the safety video and did all the paperwork.

The biggest tip when packing is don’t bring a suitcase, it takes up too much room! The RV had a huge amount of storage space that we used and so glad we did.

We packed all our clothes as well as the children’s in the cupboard above the bed and a backpack full of toys and of course the iPad so it was easily accessible for the kids while we were on the road.

Night 1- Govetts Leap lookout.

There is nothing quite like waking up to one of the most pristine views. Govetts Leap Lookout was a dream come true. A location that is a quick drive from Sydney but even a picture couldn’t do it justice. We woke up early to catch the sunrise and it was just breathtaking.

This is an awesome location to park up for the night purely just to capture the amazing views first thing in the morning right outside your door.

Day 2 – Coffs Harbour

After watching the beautiful sunrise, we packed up and headed up north to Coffs Harbour where we had booked a powered site at the BIG 4 Holiday park. Staying at a holiday park meant that we still had access to toilets, and lots of activities for the kids.

Once arriving to your campsite, I think the best thing to do is make yourself at home. We did a grocery shop on the way which saves a lot of money on eating out. There is a fridge with a generous amount of space so we made sure we got all the kids snacks, drinks and meals to cook.  There is also a huge amount of storage in the kitchen area for items that don’t necessarily need to be in the fridge as well.

Day 3

Today was extremely wet and rainy. We sat and watched on as people struggled with their tents feeling very grateful for our Motorhome.

Up in Coffs harbour there is so much to do for families, finding a park that had activities for the kids was a great help and always kept them busy. We stayed around the holiday park for the day, walked across to the beach, went fishing and just had a down day for the kids to stretch their legs and burn some energy.

We used the shower inside the RV every night & it was great! Its not the size of your shower at home but it does the job & a lot more appealing then campsite showers.

Day 4

Today we set off for Coffs Harbour’s Big Banana where they had loads of activities for kids including go-karting, a water park, a giant slide and so much more.

You can buy individual coupons for each activity or they also have value packs. One can only imagine the kids went wild.

Day 5 – Blackmans Point

We woke up in the morning and decided to head off to Sawtell (Blackmans Point), a gorgeous little town just a short drive out of Coffs Harbour. They have great fish & chips and a beautiful lookout which you can walk to via a designated walking track (there are plenty of signs to direct you).

After having breakfast overlooking the gorgeous beach we continued on an hour and a half south to Riccardo’s Tomatoes which is in Blackmans Point.

An awesome tomato & strawberry farm where you can grab a bucket and pick some of the juiciest strawberries. They have a cute little cafe with some extremely tasty scones with homemade jam and fresh cream.

This was great for kids & they had a ball. There is also plenty of space to park up the RV which was great.

Day 6 – Home to Sydney

It was finally time for us to start the drive home.

There is something about driving in a huge Motorhome that's so exciting, and the kids loved being able to face each other and look out the window and watch everything going on.

We stopped numerous times for toilet breaks & just made sure to relax and not be so conscious for time.

We finally arrived home in the evening where we unpacked the RV & then said our final goodbyes to our little home.
