Known for its laid-back culture, fresh seafood, and rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, Cairns is the tropical gateway to the many adventures of North Queensland.

What to do in Cairns and Tropical North Queensland

Cairns is the best place to start exploring this beautiful tropical paradise. The weather and the people are warm in Cairns and you’ll love the outdoor lifestyle just like the locals do. It’s probably the air, the sun and the palm trees that kick off the holiday vibe the moment you arrive.  Its a great place to explore if you love waterfalls – there are 20 waterfalls near Cairns

Cairns city has an Arts Centre, Esplanade Lagoon, botanic gardens and some of the freshest local prawns and seafood you’ll find.

Take a day trip to the islands where you can snorkel or dive amongst the reef or kayak between isolated beaches, just an hour from the mainland. Head back to land for a hike through the Daintree Rainforest where you’ll find a diverse range of plants and animals including saltwater crocodiles.

There are 11 distinct regions in TNQ including the lush rainforest of the Atherton Tablelands, resort town Port Douglas, glamorous beach village Palm Cove, mountainous Kuranda and Cape York (the very tip of Australia!).

When you’ve explored the best of Cairns journey down the east coast of Queensland or head west towards the Northern Territory.

TNQ drive routes

There are four main routes into TNQ (the Great Inland Way, Pacific Coast Way, Matilda Way and Savannah Way) and numerous drives within the region to help you explore waterfalls, swimming holes, beaches, museums and even castles.

The Savannah Way is a popular 3,700 kilometre journey that takes you across Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. You’ll take in fishing villages, fossicking sites, birdwatching spots and plenty of places for a cold drink.

One of the most popular drives among our guests is the Pacific Coast Way from Brisbane to Cairns – see our blog here
